Laura Davis (CIS 102250,1704) -- Date: Friday, 08-Dec-95 21:36:52 EST -- COMMENTS: Neat! This web stuff is too slow, though. I have a 486 DX2-66 with 8 meg RAM at home and a Pentium 90 w/16 at work, and it takes forever to do anything on the WWW either place. And I normally don't autoload images. I didn't think a Friday nite would be very busy, but I was wrong. Saw your and Joel's picture. Nice to put faces w/the verbage on the CIS forum.......Laura

Larry Thiel -- Date: Sunday, 10-Dec-95 02:28:55 EST -- COMMENTS: I like what you've done here. Many people set up a page and then mostly put links to everything else in it. Anyway, I've been wanting to do the Flower Gardens for a LONG time. Maybe this could be the year. (wish this thing would wrap by itself). Anyway, I wondered what the water temps ran for the Feb trip and have asked a number of people with no useful response. I had hoped your description would say something and then I noticed the description seemed to be a link to somewhere else. Oh well. Anyway, nice job!

I have done a Gardens trip on each, including the maiden voyage of the Spree. Both trips were great in the bang-for-the-buck category. Bob Laird -- Date: Friday, 04-Oct-96 03:19:35 EDT -- COMMENTS: More on Cammell Laird. This shipyard,is located in Birkenhead, the town which directly faces the city of Liverpool across the Mersey Estuary. Check that in your atlas. Now closed, as are almost all other British Shipyards, it's most notable constructions since WW2 were; Ark Royal (Britain's last real fixed-wing aircraft carrier) and Dreadnought (Britain's first atomic submarine). The shipyard and it's owners, were typical of the industrial revolution, both having a great influence on the history and people of Birkenhead. Birkenhead still has streets, parks, etc, named after the Lairds, indeed built by them, most notably the founder John Laird. Unfortunately the collapse of the shipyard is also very much echoed by the state of the town and area itself. PS. I am the real thing, a Scots Laird, but currently working in England. I can see the shipyard from my office window. [][][] E-Mail: Bob Laird

Scrolling down I noticed your thoughts on Kathleen Laird from Meridian (born) and Union, MS. While scrolling your "Extended" family, I noticed Kathleen Laird (Meridian) & Union, MS, & how you are kin to her. I have relatives, Dr. Laird, a span of 3rd or 4th cousin, in Union; whereas, my neck of the clan began in Jefferson Davis County, Bassfield (Prentiss) Mississippi. I'm attaching a document on my grandfather and his business in a separate e-mail. To all the gatherings back then and before "our" time, "Robert Laird" was the grandaddy of my limb of the clan. Paul Hobbs -- Date: Tuesday, 29-Oct-96 23:17:59 EST -- COMMENTS: Laird ... Nice one. It's good to see active cave diving is alive and well. How much does your helium cost/ I've just paid SI$6630 for 5 G size bottles (that's about US$1800 or US$368 each). As they come from Australia they cannot be pure helium (strange Australian rules) so they come as 3% heliox which messes up the mixing calcs. Luckily I have access to a European mixing program which allows for adding heliox to make trimix and/or heliair. By the way, ref your last e-mail. I was in the Brit Army (65 to 76) but since then have been employed by Cable & Wireless plc which insists on sending me to all these great diving locations. how are you? was thinking about you and Duke Power,

Like your home page--nice music...

On a serious note, Sprint is going thru a lot of
churn regarding Vines, etc. Got some specific problems
and opportunites right now.

One, I'm on the lookout for a CBE that I can hire for
a 6 month contract.

Two, (dumb question).. can you tell where to obtain
a (script, agent, subroutine) that monitors disk space
usage--perhaps could send an alert indicating impending
shortage, etc. Or...would SpaceGuard be a better
solution?

If you company sells such a solution, please let me
know.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Nice home page. I'm a scuba diver myself, but have never
tried cave diving.

I have been evaluating your TSR-Select utility for the past
couple of days, and it's been working great... except (there
had to be an exception, of course!) for one thing: the
program appears to access com1 &/or com2 for some reason. I
noticed because I run OS/2, and after installing the utility
in one dos session, I cannot run a communication program
in another dos session, since the os thinks that the com port
is already in use. Is there any way to prevent TSR-Select
from accessing a com port?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Doug Chappell and I dove at both in the early 80's. I've
since retired from diving and lost my logs, so it was
really interesting to read about the "beyond" in
Wappapello. We weren't real sure where the entrance
was and noone could tell us,
so we took the "down the hill and swim around"
approach to the spring -- sweat then freeze.

If you ever get over around Marianna,FL to dive, email

opened onto some pretty good cave.

Nice page.

My name is Homero Rivas and I would like to ask you about
Goodenough Spring at Lake Amistad. I believe a few months ago
a good dive buddy of mine, Todd Polson, had contacted you about
it. Last fall, we made three dive trips out there to do some
exploring. We were planning to get back out there soon and in
particular, we were wondering about the boat accomidations you
used out there. Last fall, we had access to our own boat, but
for our next planned trip, we don't have access to a boat and
we were looking to rent a boat out at Lake Amistad. We had
rented boats before, but found that the rental places that we
know of aren't that close to the spring and require that the
boats be returned by 5 in the afternoon. This has proved to
be inconvient in the past. We were wondering if you know of
any other boat rentals that are closer to Goodenough and are
more flexible with their return times. We would appreciate
information you have that might be helpful. In addition, if
you have any questions for me, I would be more than happy to
answer them.
Thank you for your time,
Homero Rivas

I hope you can help me. I attended Westbury High (Class of '70) and would like to find info on someone I knew that graduated from Westchester. Her name was Joan Elizabeth Mann and she graduated in either in 1971 or 1972. Her best friend back then was Nancy Roup. A neighbor of mine graduated in 1975 but she does not have a complete alumni book.

I would appreciate it if you could help. Either e-mail me or call at my office if you need to (713-935-9512).

Thanks,

COMMENTS: Hi,
I'm a recently certified NSS-CDS Apprentice cave diver from Wisconsin.
A buddy (he's full cave and has about 60 cave dives in) and I were
planning on a quick 6 day trip to Florida
in Feb or March...but everything except Manatee seems to be
flooded out. I was looking for alternative destinations when I came
across your pages on Roubidoux, Cannonball and Nesbitt springs.
Would these be suitable destinations for us (they certainly are much
closer.) We both are experienced wreck divers, have dry suits and
are desperate to do some cave diving!!
Are any of these on public lands?
Thanks in advance for your comments,
Tim

I was wondering if a newer version of HappyMail is comming up?

Currently I use version 1.19f on a StNT 7.5 network, but I have some problems with certification of messages. I read your comments on that in the release notes, so I have tried to use older versions of VNSMAIL.DLL. However I still have the problem.

The problem is, that I get confirmations each time I read a message that I sent to another user. When the other user reads the message I often get more than one confirmation on that.

If you have any idea, I would be very happy to know?

Great machines, just the public was not ready for them.
The clients that I work with today want nothing but Point &

just do it and as cheap as possible.

I do still have, like new in boxes here at my home, TI-99's, Timex Sinclairs, Luggables with 64K of memory and 180K

COMMENTS: HI, I made it here to check out your site, and it's really cool. I especially liked the darndest things the kids said!
I'll be back to visit again. By the way, I've had a fleeting
interest of sorts in heraldry. Before I married, I was active with the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) which involves people who recreate the middle
ages much like the other re-enactment groups. Well, I have a persona and a passed set of Arms of my own. My arms were passed by SCA's college of heraldry who researches them to make sure I don't use someone elses and they are original. Anyway, During that process (which can be lengthy) I heard of The Royal College of Heraldry in England who to this day researches and passes the REAL coats of arms granted by Royalty. I'm sure they would have the answers that you seek regarding the Laird Shield. What are the wispy looking things adorning the sides
of the shield, I can't quite make them out on the drawing?
I am an artist, and would like to take on the task of drawing it in color. I would also need as detailed of information as you have on the colors. The Heraldic jargon discription would be helpful but not necessary.

COMMENTS: Robert,

Thanks for the email, did not really expect. I also went to Memorial in'67 just before they opened Westchester. I lived in the Yorkshire subdivision on West Forest Drive off of Memorial Drive. After graduating UT, I went to work to work for Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco and have been with Philips Semiconductors in Silicon Valley for almost 15 years. I got a BA in Business and am a Senior Buyer, I handle all of Philips consulting contracts.

I am thinking of possibly visiting New Orleans next spring, I love the food there. I will make sure I do get myself some BBQ.

I visited Houston about ten years ago, the neighborhood looked the same along with my old house. Homes sure are cheap there compared to the San Francisco Bay area. I was also saddened to see that Westchester had been closed down. Also very surprised to see all the development beyond Dairy Ashford Road, there was nothing built past there.

When I was going to High School I used to hang out with Mike McConn(sp), I understand his father beame the Mayor of Houston for a while. Mike went to Saint Thomas. Which reminds me that in the first year at Westchester Saint Thomas beat us at football 69 to zip and we lost all of our games. All the football/basketball players had a choice and stayed at Memorial.

Nice connecting,
Gordon

If something is so complicated that you can't explain it in 10 seconds, then it's probably not worth knowing anyway. Who wouldn't be interested in everything we do?! I think we dream so we don't have to be apart so long. If we're in each other's dreams, we can play together all night. As a math atheist, I should be excused from this. This one's tricky. You have to use imaginary numbers, like eleventeen ... You can present the material, but you can't make me care. From now on, I'll connect the dots my own way. I'm learning real skills that I can apply throughout the rest of my life ... Procrastinating and rationalizing. Reality continues to ruin my life. Calvin: Sometimes when I'm talking, my words can't keep up with my thoughts. I wonder why we think faster than we speak. Hobbes: Probably so we can think twice. I'm sending it on to my brother, Larry, who missed due to a blow out on his motorcycle while on hte way from Dallas. He will really enjoy being able to see the ceremony. It looks like the photos came out a little under exposed ... lousy lighting conditions. But, I would like to retrieve and archive them locally. Is there an easy way to download them as a whole? COMMENTS: My Laird connection is a little difficult to explain, but is definate. My father was born around 1920, in Neosho, Mo. His mother was 16 and named Julia Benton. His father surname was Laird. I don't know his first name. Heres the sticky part. They were not married, the entire story was kept a big secret because of the times they lived in. If they had been allowed to marry, my last name would have been Laird. I have only recently been able to find out even this much information. In times past I have been accused along with my father of being half Klingon, something about temper and stubborness. (ha) Anyway I also know his father was half Cherokee. They all lived in that small town around 1920, and I thought it would be a simple thing to uncover the facts. But instead I have run into one brick wall after another. Nobody seems able to help me I am so new to all this I squeek. I really do appreciate this entire Laird site and the association as its about the only hope of a connection I still have. Thanks for all your hard work! By the way, I would like to add that my grandmother Julia and my grandfather Laird truly wanted to get married but were forbidden to as a punishment. One year later she married someone else and left Neosho and my father behind forever. He never saw her again, nor was he allowed to know his father. He was raised by his grandmother, Annie Benton. I love my dad and I am proud of my Scottish roots. I would desperately like to know more. I would be most greatfulfor any help at all. Thanks again to everyone involved. Terry

I do volunteer social work for the elderly and disabled and designed and maintain a web site for the local Humane Society at www.amaonline.com/aphs. I list the the Lost and Found pets daily and take pictures of 10 dogs and cats a week and put them on the internet for adoption. I'm working on a site for Catholic Family Services now. I remember what a "whiz-kid" you were and looks like you stayed up with computer jive. After I moved to West Texas I took up English riding and trained jumnping horses and Dressage horses for about 20 years. I do full-time volunteer work now. Hear from anyone else from Westchester? COMMENTS: I was doing a search on my fathers name, Charles Luther Laird, Jr. and came across you site. I too work in the Information Technology world as a programmer/consultant, as does my brother, Bruce, as a Network/Systems Administrator. The coincidences keep coming. I have a friend in Houston, Robert Young, who is a avid diver and we took a trip to Cozumel in 1998. I also have a friend, Steve BAGLEY, here in my home town, Champaign, Illinois. My father grew up in Lakeview, TX, but moved around the southwest a lot with his parent Luther Charles Laird, Sr. and Tennessee Virginia Laird and his brother, Robert, and Sister, Peggy. My father is currently in Arizona in the hospital with pancreatic cancer and perhaps those who read this message might say a prayer for him to get better. I wanted to let you know that you have a great site. Thanks.

COMMENTS: Great stuff! Very impressive - makes me feel like I have no life at all. I am a programmer in Rapid City, SD - database stuff - mostly MS Access. I read with interest the cave diving in Mexico. My wife, some friends and I vacationed in Playa Del Carmen a few years ago and snorkled an underwater cave called Dos Ojos. I'm not a diver but thuroughly enjoyed the experience, traveling in the jungle and seeing how the Mayans live, etc. We were inspired to take diving lessons when we returned home but Liz, my wife, was studying for her Masters in nursing and we didn't have the time. Maybe this year. Can't wait to go back to Playa for a visit - what a place! Nice visiting your page. I found the link on Laird.com.

COMMENTS: I own a Dive Store at Lake Amistad in Del Rio, TX. As you can tell I built my own web page and I am NOT good with computers. There is plenty of good diving down here and we get quite a few divers from the Houston Area. There is a huge underground spring that flows into Lake Amistad that is unexplored with the exception of a few brave souls going 50 feet or so in. They say it opens into a huge cavern system.

COMMENTS: Hi, You have a very interesting home page for two reasons! First, I am a 47 year old assistant principal in Georgia who was adopted at birth. I have 2 half sisters that I would love to locate. One was named Patricia Laird and would be about 55 at this time. She attended Hogg Jr. High in Texas when she was 15. (I have a photo with this information.) The other half-sister was named Marty. Their father was a Laird. We share the same mother, who was named Colleen,(I'm not sure of her exact first name), but who also had the nickname of Clyde. I don't expect that they are a close relation to you, but have you ever heard of them? Or do you know someone elderly who might know of them? Any information would be appreciated. Secondly, your enthusiasm for cave diving is familiar to me! My husband's first cousin was Sheck Exley, who is sometimes called the "grandfather" of cave diving. Are you familiar with Sheck? As you probably know, he died several years ago on a dive in Mexico. However, cave diving was his passion! As it is obviously yours! Obviously you are very bright and talented. Good luck in all of your endeavors! Have a good day. Beth

COMMENTS: Robert,Since I was looking for the FATHER of Sallie Ann Laird who married William Wylie Abney, I found that I was far more closely related to the Lairds than I thought. Malinda Graham was my gg aunt, her brother, James Ervin Graham was my gg grandfather. Thanks to Russell Laird, I have gotten much more information, If you need any on the Grahams that did not come from a web page I can probably give it to you. To even more confuse the findings, Thomas J Laird married Martha Ann Ophelia Abney, daughter on my gg grand father' side, John Beck Abney. The father of Sallie Ann Laird is Elim Morgan Laird and Jane Bradley, I still dont know who Morgan Laird's father was. E M Laird was once a deacon at Beulah Baptist Church in Newton Co Ms. I assume that this was Morgan, in Oct 1876, The Edward G Laird also served in the Civil war.

COMMENTS: Feel like I hit the Jack-pot! Recently started working on my husband's family. We have a huge, good book on the Days.(Org. Sp.) His mother was a Faust, some known family. and his grandmother was a Laird. She died at 39 yrs. old. Nothing is known of her. I sort of did not like that! Her name was Cordelia Robeline Laird. The 8th of 9 children. b Jan 19 1887. Had 6 Faust children. Only youngest, Marjorie is living. She can't remember any of this side. The family ended up in La., but Elijah William Laird, Robeline's father, was buried in Covington County, Ms. b Mar 14 1843. d 1897. Wife was Martha Welch, buried in Provencal, La. Where they lived when they died. But she took him back to Ms. to be buried for some reason. There is a Welch/Graham Cemetery there. No doubt that was home. If you have any info or connections, that would be great. I am really interested in Bobby, who is the runner. My husband had great speed at LSU in the GLORY DAYS!!!! COMMENTS: Hi, I'm from Scotland and I'm currently working as a lab technician in Kent, in the south of England. I was amused to read about the limited number of 'acceptable' names for males Lairds. You dont know how true this is. In my branch of the family almost every male is Robert or John, especially Robert. This is my dads name, and he has an uncle and several cousins with the name of Robert Kerr Laird. Not a very imaginative lot!

Alan Erik Laird Date:
COMMENTS: My name is Alan Laird and my father's name is Robert Harold Laird. This would confirm your theory about limited names for male Lairds. Unfortunately, our sons were named before we found your web site. They are Matthew and Daniel. My dad was born in Hastings, MN to Charles and Ruby Laird. I have an older brother Edward. The tree goes back to my great grandfather Stewart Laird, but I don't know anything beyond that. Stewart lived most of his life in Walker, IA. If anyone has any tie-ins, please drop me a line.

COMMENTS: Robert, I do remember you, you look familiar, it been twenty years. I found your web page searching for U.S.S. Bagley hits, under people I have found...., thought I drop you a couple lines. My first ship was a tin can destroyer out of Philadelphia, PA, U.S.S. Harold J. Ellison DD-864, from 1975-1978. I was a fellow shipmate on the U.S.S.Bagley FF-1069 from 1978-1980. I boarded "The-Bag" when she was drydocked in Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Rate was STG2. I was a MK114 Fire Control Technician. I served in 3RD Division under LTJG Sapp, STG/SC George Quinada, STG1 Sly and worked with STG2 Mike LaFleur, so many others but I cannot remember names. I was also a Duty Master at Arms most of my tour on board, along with being Duty Weapons ocasionally,Duty Gunner's Mate, Duty Sonarman etc. I remember LT. Hardin, he was my OOD quite a few times, ET2 Gerry White and Bill Shanahan (sp.) Bagley was my last ship as I was getting short on the 1980 Wes Pac and had an early out in Subic Bay PI. I have not heard from anyone for twenty years...until today. Nice to be able to think back to those times as we are getting older. I would like to see a Web page for the Bagley as my first ship has one, maybe someone could duplicate it. Only if you have some time on your hands.....just kidding...it has been nice finding you in the electronic world we live in today. If we were WWII vets we probably would have never had contact again. Best of Luck to you, Your Old Shipmate: Rick.
